Christian Schmidt is a surgeon. He studied medicine in Münster, completed his habilitation in Kiel, was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Yale School of Medicine in 2003/2004 and holds an adjunct professorship (apl. Professor) at Hannover Medical School. He has spent the larger part of his career not at the operating table, however, but running hospitals.
For seven years he was Medical Director and Chair of the Executive Board of a university medical centre. From that position you see discharge from above: length of stay, readmissions, social workers on the phone on a Friday afternoon. He then led a nationwide home care provider and saw the same interface from the other side. Coordinated Care is the consequence of both.
For almost three decades the same question has occupied him: how to build care structures so that patients do not fall through the gaps between them. His Master of Public Health thesis was titled “Structural, process and outcome quality in surgery”. Some twenty specialist publications later, the question is unchanged.
